1 Why Does a Top-Tier University Matter?

Focusing solely on education, everything you learn in an economics undergraduate degree can be learnt online for free. So many universities post open-source lectures and the price of books and materials is negligible if not free through PDF-searching on Google.

So what then is the point of university?

Signalling

Your degree acts as a signal to the outside world at large and the employers more specifically that you must be at least reasonably hard working, dedicated, intelligent and a functional member of society.

The more competitive and rigorous your course, the stronger the signal you send that you can out-work and out-smart others. If you are thinking this line of reasoning is flawed then you are not wrong, but nonetheless this signal is the best and most convenient proxy variable available to the outside world.

Note: proxy variable is a variable that is not in itself directly relevant, but that serves in place of an unobservable or immeasurable variable. In this case, all thefactors that will make you a competent employee (dedication, intelligence, socialskills etc.) cannot easily be measured and so they proxied by your education.

See here to read one of the earlier works on the signalling theory of higher education.

HOME

Experience

Secondly, the experience. Do you think it a coincidence that 44 out of 57 UKprime ministers studied at Oxbridge? Or that if you asked investment bankers, lawyers and consultants you’d find many of them originate from the same concentrated subset of universities?

There is no particular knowledge that these institutions teach that enables their graduates to become successful prime ministers, investment bankers, lawyers or consultants. In fact, 90% of what you learn in your degree will not be applied in your career.

Rather, coupled with the signalling, what a top-tier university empowers its students with is the experience of being surrounded by like-minded equally ambitious peers, networks of alumni that have treaded the path currently in front of you and, through a variety of career fairs and industry sessions, ageneral ambience that sets you up to successfully pursue your career aspirations.

How we will work together to craft your perfect personal statement

Our approach

We will work on moulding you first into the ideal candidate that can truly show evidence of enthusiasm, interest and dedication towards economics
We draft and finalise your personal statement based on the many experiences you will have developed over the last 8 months
HOME

Personal Statement Submissions

Others’ approach (your competition)

Do nothing
Try and write the best personal statement they can with whatever they have to talk about
My approach tackles the most common challenge students face when writing a personal statement – they don’t have much that *shows* enthusiasm and commitment, they have to resort to *telling*. This breaks one of the most important rules in literature – Show don’t tell.

Oxbridge Interview Preparation Process

How do you deal with uncertainty

So far, in the life of a student there is a high degree of predictability. If you study hard, you will get good results, if you train hard you will do well in your sport of choice etc.

Unfortunately, this almost one-for-one correlation doesn’t hold in adult life. The university application process and an Oxbridge interview in particular may be your first experience of a significant amount of uncertainty.

Put simply, what that means is you could be the most qualified candidate but end up having brain fog on interview day or not being familiar with a particular concept and not perform that well. Conversely, someone less qualified may have by-chance only read one book on economics about a particular topic and that is the topic that comes up in the interview, which he, as such, performs very well in.

Love it or hate it, fate is fate.

My approach to overprepare you

1
Gain early exposure

It is imperative to start early when it comes to interview-prep as the main technique I use is to expose you to a large number of potential discussion topics on a frequent basis, through bi-weekly or monthly discussion sessions where we pick a topic, you explain it to me, share your views and be prepared for me to probe whether you have really understood the topic.

2
Practice… a lot

The other side is to prepare you for probably the most important quality interviewers look for – critical thinking/problem solving, often through a series of problems which are inevitably mathematical in nature.

I recommend roughly 3 mock interview sessions in which I go through 1 to 2 problems in each session. The expectation is not for you to know the answer, rather the interview just wants to see how you will approach an unfamiliar situation, they want to see how your brain works, not so much what your brain knows. Following each session, we will debrief where I will explain the solutions.

Unfortunately, there is no single book or resource that can prepare you for an Oxbridge interview, the best prep is to genuinely have an interest for your subject, gain exposure to a wide array of literature which I will discuss with you and train yourself to think logically to solve problems step by step which I will expose you to.

Which of the two paragraphs below gives a greater sense of dedication and interest towards the subject matter at hand?

Lazy Liam

My interest in economics was sparked by all of the global events that have occurred over the last three years. In particular, I am fascinated by how the Russia-Ukraine conflict has had such wide-spread effects globally and led to cost-led inflation across Europe, the effects of which are being felt quite heavily in the UK cost of living crisis. On this topic, I had read [xyz book] by [xyz economist] that explained how disruptive Covid-19 has been to the economy and

Active Abigail

“Inflation – what was first introduced to me just as an economic concept I had researched as a 15 year-old girl for an article I was writing for my school’s monthly newsletter I now hear being prominently discussed and debated between almost everyone. Investors, businessmen, politicians, academics and even the grandmothers at the care home I volunteer at weekly. Of course, the latter refer to it as the price of tea and biscuits skyrocketing and not inflation. Whilst there is little debate over its presence, I have had first-hand experience through my most recent debate at [xyz debate club] over the divergent views on its underlying causes. Heavily influenced by [xyz economist] whose public lecture at [xyz institution] I had the privilege of attending where he outlined inflation predominantly being a monetary phenomenon, I argued for the central role decade-long lose monetary policy and quantitative easing have played in contributing to the current inflation levels whereas my interlocutor placed a higher emphasis on cost-driven inflationary pressures due to Covid supply chain disruptions and the impact the Russia-Ukraine conflict has had on fuel prices across Europe.

Is My Service
Right for You?

My service suits you well if you:

  • Are a hard-working dedicated student
  • Are willing to put in the effort required for a strong application
  • Have already made your mind up on studying economics or an economics related degree (economics and mathematics or government or philosophy for example)

My service is not for:

  • Anyone not willing to put in the effort in terms of extra activities, reading and interview preparation
  • Anyone expecting a done-for-you service where you simply pay and expect a personal statement to be written for you
I will not write your personal statement for you, I will however guide you towards all the things you can do to ensure you have plenty of impressive things to write about and then review and comment on drafts of your personal statement, make suggestions and iterate until it is perfect.

4 Who Am I?

5 A*s at A-Level (math, further math, physics, chemistry, economics)
Studied economics at LSE
8+ years in investment banking
If you’re an academically inclined student that wants to learn how the world works in a way that combines mathematical/statistical rigour with heavy literature and have a high-effort high-reward high-impact career then really, I am just you but slightly older.

As someone who didn’t have any proper support system around me, I really had to learn things the hard way by myself. I’m now looking to work with dedicated aspiring economics students to impart everything I learnt during my process.
